First League game for a while.....

This is the first Codo League game I've played for a while. I have been moving steadily up the Vet division, so am hoping to continue on up with this match.

I've not played Demonspawn before so have no idea how good he is, although we are similarly ranked. Its a 10 point match, as even as they get.

The map is Space For Rent , one I havent played before and I am over on the Blue side.

It looks like quite a good map for Mechs, since its all destructable scenery so MT;s would have a field day on this map. Greys might also be good, but its only a 20 FP game which would leave me a bit short of units.

Actually I've just noticed that there is a large metal wall running up the middle of the map that would shield a lot of space from direct missile attack.

I think I'm actually going to go with Spawn. There are quite a few routes to take that would be hidden from the enemys view, and since its a 20 FP game I'm hoping that I might be able to overrun him with sheer numbers. Also, any units I can eat and recycle 'count' more in a 20 point game.

I've taken 1 Queen, 5 Buzzers, 6 Drones, 4 Spikers and a Goo Spitter.

Lets get this moving

I've delayed on this game for ages, whilst trying to get a few other writeups done (its amazing just how long they take....). you can see just how long I've delayed by checking out the posting dates in this category!

First things first, I'm getting my Queen to eat a few walls to make a hidden route for herself through towards the middle of the map.

I'm moving the drones up to sit inside one of the doble doorways. I want them near the centre when I find out what race I'm playing.

I'm moving the buzzers towards the middle also, leaving one with a glace out through one of the middle-bottom windows.

The Spikers are also moving up into better positions.

Dont really have much of a plan for this yet, its quite a small map, and my troops are quick so I should be able to adjust fairly rapidly depending on what comes back at me.....

Xenomorphs!

Its Spawn Vs Spawn.

In hindsight I should really have taken the clue form my opponents name.....

I've seen a few buzzers and a drone also running towards the middle of the map.

In my experience Spawn Vs Spawn games often come down to who can eat the most corpses.. Ideally I want to draw his troops in towards my Queen.

I'm moving the Spikers into the nearby corridor, and opfiring up towards where the enemy was sighted. I'm pulling the furthest buzzer back, and getting it to eat the intervening door so that the Spikers can get shots off towards the enemy.

I'm posisitoning my remaining troops near other doors to start munching on anything that wonders in. I'll have to expect a splatter or two though.... so I need to try to get my Spitter into a decent defensive position. I'm getting it to fire into the main corridor, trying to block off the junction. I have lots of flying troops in there anyway so it shouldnt cause me a problem.

Where did he go?

Not much happened that turn.....

A few goo balls came towards me, so maybe he is hoping to attack this turn. I doubt it though.....

I'm going to make a few escape route with my Queen, and whizz a few buzzers around to get some intel on what is coming my way.

I'm advancing my Drones a little to see if there is anything to bite. They are getting hungry.

Incoming!!!!

My buzzer has spotted two Splatters coming my way round the outside of the building, towards my Queen and all the Spikers!

Time to move them clear! I've left a drone behind the destroyable doors, and am moving a drone to stand near the new hole the Queen has chewwed. I'm hoping that if they come in through the door in the Queens room then they will persue her, towards my waiting drone and the Goo ball thats about to explode there. The buzzer that spotted them did such a good job that I'm sending it out on a longer recon trip towards the other side of the map.

Advancing my drones out certainly seemed to help, as I have eaten one enemy drone, and have practically killed another, while only having one of mine slightly injured. The areas is covered with goo though, so it'll be a few turns until I can get my Queen anywhere nearby.

Im retreating my injured Drone back for recycling. I plan to lay an egg next turn, and then start chewing away the walls around the centre to give myselv a better view at any incoming troops. When the goo has cleared I want to get to the corpses to bolster my forces.

Getting stuck in

My plan to trap the incoming Splatters worked ok. The first one got stuck in the goo, and my spikers took a few shots at it. Unfortunately the Drone took a bit also and has finished it off. Test orders show that the blast destroys the corpse of the Drone I had just killed for recycling. How annoying!

There is another incoming splatter, but the surviving Drone and spikers should sort it.

The middle area is getting a bit messy. I'm moving the queen on in that direction as next turn the floor is free for me to eat the corpses. I'm also gooing the other side of the middle area to prevent his queen from getting that way. Thats where a lot of the corpses are, so I want to deny him access. His Queen is in the same room that mine was waiting in, so its going to be a race to the corpses.

Goo-ed Grief!

Oh dear, it looks like he had exactly the same plan. My Queen is gooed up, meaning I cant move for 3 turns or so.... However, my own Goo Spitter is sending more shots it to hopefully stop him getting to too many corpses.

The problem is that there are going to be a few more corpses around in a moment. My advanced Spikers have been overrun with Drones, and most of my troops are injured.

The current score is 8-9 and I dont think its going to end up in my favour....

Stuck!

My Queen is well and truly gooed up! I'm firing back at the enemy Queen position through the slit in the metal wall, hoping to get them to stick for as long as I do. My Spitter lacks the angle to get them over the all, so I'm having to get through the slit..... tricky.

We've traded a few units , leaving me with a badly injured Goo Spitter, a buzzer, a Spiker and of course my Queen.

At the beginning of the turn the score was 8-9, now it is 11-13, so I'm slowly losing the battle. I need to get my Queen heavily involved, but thats bit tricky when she is stuck to the floor.

I'm sending the buzzer to see what the enemy Queen is up to, and hopefully to eat any eggs she may have laid. Also, I might be able to finish off the nasty Goo Spitter that has been plaguing me!

Last ditch plan....?

Ok, Current score is 12-14.

I know he has 1 badly wounded Drone, 2 slightly wounded drones, a Goo spitter and a Queen.

I managed to goo up the Queen myself, and also my goo took out the spitter that was drenching my own Queen.

That leaves one more spitter that I could go for with my remaining buzzer.

I have a choice. I could either persue that spitter, hoping to avoid the drones long enough to kill it off, hopefully getting my Queen freed up for corpse eating. Alternatively I could try to lure the drones near to my Queen so that she can bite them, and eat them after that.

If I go for the spitter and the drones get me them I'm toast.

If I try to draw the drones in, but they are ordered away, then at least I still have the buzzer left for more recon and another attempt on the spitter. Thats what I shall do!

I've plotted a track for my buzzer taking it behind the Queen. Hopefully the drones will wonder near enough so that she can bite them and finish them off....

Here goes nothing!

Erm....

Not exactly what I had in mind...

The buzzer got eaten, my Spitter got eaten, and the drones all ran away. That leaves me with just my Queen.

At least it makes plotting orders nice and easy.

The good news is that my Queen gets unstuck this turn, and I should be able to nosh on a corpse and lay an egg. Also, before it dies my Spitter gooed up his Queen again, so she is stuck there , unablke to lay more than a single egg for 2 turns or so.

My problem is that I do not know where the enemy Spitter is. If I get stuck again then its definately game over. If I can wriggle free then I may just be able to stage a comeback.

Oh dear...

You guessed it, Gooed again.

If I had moved behind the wall instead of laying the egg then I think I'd still be free.

However, I did manage to get an egg laid and it looks like I may have a way out of the goo.

In test orders at least there is a small channel that has remained goo free. If I get my Queen to gnaw through the walls nearby it gives me enough room to move free. It may just be a quirk or the client and in reality that area is completely gooed.

It my only hope so I have to give it a go.

Nope

Still gooed. Damn.

Trying to escape this turn, but if more goo comes my way then I'm going to lose for certain.

A few goo shots came incoming but they bounced harmlessly away.

Lets hope my luck lasts.

A hatchling!

My wegg hatched into a drone that went charging off towards the enemy. Its chased the queen , and looks like its next to an egg that it will hopefully bite. I cant order it to do that directly as the Queen is over it....

I'm under attack from Spikers, and dont think I'll last much longer. The only good thing is that his Goo Spitter exhausted its ammo and so I wont be stuck for much longer. Will it be too long though......?

I'm done for!

My drone has been eaten, my Queen has been freshly gooed, and I'm under Spiker attack.

I think I'm going to be out of this very soon.......

I have a new unit!

Hurrah!

The downside is that the only reason I have a new unit is because my Queen died and the egg she has been sitting on has finally hatched....

So, 1 Spiker against the masses.

Not good.

And we're done.....

My lone Spiker wasnt much of a mass for his entire army. The result was messy.....

All in all a fun game. It really came down to who could goo best, and it wasn't me.

Well done demonspawn.... I think I'll have to rechallenge you one day.
